Exploring the Confucian conception of the human being in Korea

English review | MA. Hoang Thi Thu* - 16:52, 29/10/2026
(DTTG) - Abstract: This article provides an in-depth analysis of the Confucian conception of the human being within the historical, cultural, and social context of Korea. By examining the evolution and adaptation of Confucian thought from the Goryeo period through the Joseon dynasty with a particular focus on pivotal philosophical debates, such as the discourse on the “Four Beginnings and Seven Emotions” (Sadan Chiljeong) between Yi Hwang (Toegye) and Ki Dae-seung (Gobong), the article elucidates the structure of the Confucian view of humanity as it developed in Korea. Here, the human being does not exist as an isolated self, but rather as a relational moral entity, continuously perfecting itself through the cultivation of character and the practice of ritual propriety. Finally, this research examines the evolution, core values and implications of this worldview within modern Korean society.
