(DTTG) - As Tet (Vietnamese New Year) arrives and spring returns, in the Thai villages of Northwest (Vietnam), people and nature harmonize in a gentle way. The space filled with the vibrant pink of peach blossoms and the pristine white of plum blossoms, is further enhanced by the colorful traditional costumes worn by women enjoying the spring festivities.

The Com costume is the traditional clothing of Thai ethnic women. The Thai people are divided into two groups: The Black Thai people and the White Thai people have different traditional clothing styles. The Com costumes worn by Black Thai women have a round or high neckline that fits snugly around the neck, creating an elegant look. The Com costumes worn by White Thai women have a heart-shaped neckline, edged with black fabric, giving them a slender and graceful appearance. However, the Com costumes of both groups must necessarily have a row of butterfly buttons. One row of buttons represents the male butterflies, and the other represents the female butterflies; when fastened, they create a harmonious focal point. The number of buttons depends on the wearer. Unmarried girls will have an odd number of buttons, while married girls will have an even number to show that they are married.

Between the vibrant colors of the Northwest mountains and forests in spring, the Com costumes worn by Thai women stands out in a very unique way. The fitted dress accentuates the waist, highlighting the wearer’s graceful figure while maintaining a modest and discreet appearance. The row of butterfly buttons running down the front of the garment, though a small detail, containing profound insights into the people and life of an ethnic group.

In traditional Thai culture, the image of the butterfly is associated with the life cycle, with growth and transformation. Butterflies appear in folklore, in interpretations of life and the relationship between humans and nature. When incorporated into the Com costumes, the butterfly-shaped buttons are arranged in a straight, symmetrical line, centered on the body. This arrangement reflects the very strict aesthetic thinking of the Thai people, which is that beauty must be linked to order and harmony. That’s also how the Thai people view life: the individual is inseparable from the collective, the particular is always within the common good...

For Thai women, knowing how to sew the Com costumes and make beautiful buttonholes is not just a skill, but also a part of their personal growth. The buttons are handcrafted, requiring patience and skill. By looking at the buttons on a woman’s shirt, one can judge whether she is careful and meticulous or careless and hasty. The rows of butterfly buttons run straight and evenly, without any deviation, like a silent reminder to the owner to always maintain order in their way of life.

At each age, Thai women have different choices regarding the style, patterns and colors of their Com costumes. Young girls often choose bright colors, such as white, red, yellow,… along with prominent patterns. Older women tend to choose muted colors, such as black or brown, with subtle patterns. However, not everyone remembers the significance of the butterfly buttons. If we want young people to love the Com costumes, they need to understand why our ancestors valued each small button so much. Therefore, it is necessary to incorporate stories about the Com costumes into cultural education, experiential activities in villages and tourism communication… so that the Com costumes can continue to tell the story of traditional clothing in modern life. Because ultimately, preserving the Com costumes are not just about preserving a style of clothing, but about preserving the way the Thai people convey their worldview through every stitch, seam and unique butterfly-shaped button. That is the place where the cultural heritage of the Thai people continues to flow through many generations…

On a spring day in a Thai village, gentle rays of sunlight fall softly on the flower petals and the breeze carries the scent of the mountains. Thai women go out to celebrate the spring festival, looking graceful and elegant in their sleek black skirts, neatly tied blue belts and brightly colored Com costumes. The neatly arranged butterfly buttons, carefully fastening are a subtle detail on the garment, as if telling a story about craftsmanship and the Thai people’s philosophy of valuing order and harmony. In that moment, visitors deeply felt how the Thai people celebrate spring in a simple, modest way, closely connected with nature and the bond between people. The spring festival is lively and bustling, with people wearing green, white, and red traditional clothing, weaving together a vibrant and culturally rich spring scene. The flowing silhouettes and vibrant colors of the traditional clothing add a touch of romance to springtime in the Thai villages. That spring was not only a spring of nature, but also a spring of Thai culture spreading throughout the world naturally, like the breath of the mountains and forests in the harmonious beauty of traditional costumes.
