The Vu Lan festival and the process of transforming consciousness

(DTTG) - Within the framework of Buddhist doctrine, filial piety is not merely a compulsory social norm; rather, it is elevated to a method of spiritual practice leading toward liberation. For Buddhists, the Ullambana (Vu Lan) season, a time dedicated to filial gratitude serves as an occasion for profound reflection on the spirit of filial piety, the enactment of such devotion and the practice of the “Four Profound Gratitudes” within one’s daily life. The foundation of the Ullambana spirit lies in the integration of a “filial heart” (a sense of gratitude) and “filial conduct” (acts of showing appreciation). Drawing inspiration from the scriptural account of the Venerable Maudgalyayana rescuing his mother, Buddhists come to realize that the debt of gratitude owed to one’s parents for the gift of life is immeasurable, a debt that cannot be fully repaid through mere material offerings.

On the basis of clarifying the origin of Buddhist scriptures (Vu Lan Pen Sutra) and the transformation from Indian thought into the Vietnamese cultural space, the author analyzes the essential meaning of filial piety in Buddhism and its organic blend with the Vietnamese tradition of Ancestor worship, “drinking water, remembering the source”. Research indicates that Vu Lan extends beyond a sectarian religious ritual to become a core element of Vietnam’s social and ethical values, contributing to the cohesion of families and lineages while transforming individual consciousness in the contemporary context. This article provides an in-depth analysis of the ideological structure of filial piety in Buddhism, the process of Vietnamizing the Vu Lan ritual and the enduring value of this moral virtue in the spiritual life of the Vietnamese people, spanning from tradition to modernity.

(DTTG) - Abstract: This article analyzes the value of filial piety in the context of the intersection between traditional Confucianism and Caodaism. In Confucianism, filial piety is the foundation of all social relationships, emphasizing respect, care and the preservation of one’s integrity towards one's parents even after their passing. Caodaism inherits these finest qualities but elevates filial piety to a core practice. Accordingly, filial piety is not limited to family duties (humanitarianism) but extends to love for humanity (great filial piety) and is a prerequisite for attaining the heavenly path. The article asserts that filial piety is the measure of a practitioner’s value and the spiritual bond connecting generations.
