Cultural activities in the Xen ban and Xen muong festivals contribute to community cohesion“Xen” in Thai language means offering or giving thanks. Xen ban is a ritual to worship the guardian deity of the village; Xen muong is on a larger scale, a common ritual for an entire region. The shaman - a person knowledgeable in local customs presides over the ritual, offering sacrifices to the spirits, praying for favorable weather, abundant harvests, thriving livestock and the health of the villagers. In that solemn space, the sound of gongs and drums resounded as if inviting ancestors and deities to witness the devotion of their descendants.
The profound value of Xen ban and Xen muong lies first and foremost in the spirit of gratitude. The Thai people believe that the land, rivers, streams, mountains and forests all possess souls. If people want to live in peace, they must respect and protect nature. The festival, therefore, not only has spiritual significance but also serves as a reminder of the responsibility to protect forests, preserve water resources, and maintain agricultural land, factors that determine the sustainability of life. According to Associate Professor Dr. Khong Dien, former Director of the Institute of Ethnology, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences stated: “Xên bản, Xên mường are very unique forms of community self-governance. Through rituals, the Thai people reinforce customary laws, reminding each other of moral principles and the spirit of solidarity. This is the foundation for the stability and long-term development of the village”. This observation shows that the festival not only has spiritual value, but also carries profound social significance.
Following the ceremony, the lively festivities begin with the unifying Xoe dance, accompanied by the sounds of bamboo flutes and drums. The circle widens, with young and old, men and women, visitors from afar joining hands in a spirited rhythm. Those very bracelets symbolize strong bonds. During the festival, any animosities are resolved, everyone shares in the joy and sends wishes for a peaceful new year.
Xen ban and Xen muong are important festivals in the spiritual life of the Thai peopleBesides nurturing spiritual life, Xen ban and Xen muong also contribute to boosting the economy. In recent years, many localities have incorporated festivals into their cultural tourism programs, attracting a large number of tourists. Visitors not only get to witness traditional rituals, but also enjoy the cuisine, buy brocade products and experience homestay in stilt houses. As a result, many families have gained additional income and their material living standards have improved significantly.
Between the majestic mountain scenery, the image of the shaman respectfully bowing before the offering tray and the long circle dance in the firelight of the night festival, symbolizes continuity. Xen ban and Xen muong not only maintain peace in the villages and communities spiritually, but also keep people’s hearts calm and their beliefs strong. It is a belief in the power of unity, in cultural identity, and in the path of sustainable development that the Thai people are pursuing alongside the rest of the country.
With each passing festival season, seeds of faith are sown in the community. And from the Xen ban and Xen muong traditions, the unique beauty of the Thai people, the aspiration for prosperity and happiness continues to be kindled and spread throughout the Northwest region./.
